Preparing Your Home For The Boiler Update Scheme 2023

Preparing your home for the boiler upgrade scheme 2023

Are you a homeowner in the UK looking to upgrade your home’s heating system? If so, you may want to take advantage of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme 2023, which was recently announced by the government. Under this scheme, eligible homeowners can receive grants to replace their old boiler with a new, energy-efficient model. However, there’s a catch: The grant levels are changing, and you need to act fast if you want to get the highest amount possible. In this blog post, we’ll discuss what the Boiler Upgrade Scheme 2023 is, how to determine if you’re eligible, and what you can do to prepare your home for this update.

Understand the boiler upgrade scheme 2023

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme 2023 is a government-funded programme designed to help UK homeowners replace their old, inefficient boilers with new, energy-efficient models. The scheme offers grants of up to £5,000 to eligible homeowners to help cover the cost of purchasing and installing a new boiler. The goal of the scheme is to reduce carbon emissions and improve the overall energy efficiency of homes across the UK.

Installers, on behalf of property owners, can apply for:

  • £5000 off the cost of an air source heat pump and installation
  • £5000 off the cost of a biomass boiler and installation
  • £6000 off the price and installation of a ground source heat pump, which includes water source heat pumps.

Determine if you’re eligible

To be eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme 2023, you need to meet several criteria. First, you need to be the owner-occupier of a home in the UK. Second, your current boiler needs to be at least ten years old and inefficient (i.e., it has an energy efficiency rating of less than C). Finally, you need to use a Gas Safe registered engineer to install your new boiler. If you meet these criteria, you’re eligible to apply for the grant.

Prepare your home for the update

Before you apply for the grant, you need to prepare your home for the update. For that, first you need to choose an energy-efficient boiler that meets your needs. Consider factors such as the size of your home, your hot water usage, and your budget when selecting a model. Also, you should consider upgrading your heating controls, such as your thermostat or programmer, to improve your home’s energy efficiency even furth

Act fast to get the highest grant level

On Thursday, September 21, 2023, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero issued a change notice. According to BUS Regulation 13(4), the BUS grant level for air source heat pumps and ground source heat pumps will be increased. Starting from Monday, October 23, 2023, installers can apply for the newly increased grant amounts. The grants available are based on the following technology types:

  • Air source heat pumps: £7,500
  • Ground source heat pumps: £7,500
  • Biomass boilers: £5,000

If voucher applications for heat pumps are submitted on or after Monday, October 23, 2023, they will receive the increased grant amount. This is, of course, subject to meeting BUS eligibility criteria and successfully redeeming the voucher within the validity period. Any vouchers that have already been issued will receive the grant value mentioned on the voucher upon redemption. These vouchers can be redeemed both before and after October 23, 2023. However, installers have the option to withdraw their voucher via the installer dashboard and reapply after the new grant levels come into force. We recommend property owners and installers to discuss any potential withdrawal and make decisions based on their respective circumstances.

Please note that installers will not be able to withdraw vouchers once they receive confirmation that their redemption application has been approved and processed for payment. Also, installers who have already received their grant will not be able to apply for the higher grant value once it becomes effective.

Any installation commissioned on or after April 1, 2022, will remain eligible to apply for a grant. If installations were commissioned before the grant level change takes effect, they can still apply for the new grant value by submitting their application on or after October 23, 2023.

Grant funding of £450 million is available over three years, from 2022 to 2025.
