Do I need cavity wall insulation?

It is safe to assume that if your home was built after the 1920’s there is a high chance it has got cavity walls and unless it was built within the last 20 years those wall cavities are probably empty. Filling them with cavity wall insulation could be a very cost effective way of retaining heat in your home and save on your energy bills.

Around one third of the heat loss from most homes happens through the walls of the house. Cavity wall insulation could save you up to £160 a year in heating bills.

Why is cavity wall insulation needed?

Cavity wall insulation is an important improvement to make to a property as it can slow the movement of heat through your walls meaning your heating stays within the confines of the house. Maintaining a good temperature inside your home is important for both comfort and health reasons and these cannot be underestimated.

Generating the energy needed to heat your home can involve the burning of fossil fuels, especially if your home is heated with gas or electricity. This generation of electricity has devastating consequences for the environment. If your heating is being wasted through leaking walls it means you need to use more energy from your heating system to keep up the required temperature. This results in more demand for energy and more needed to be generated. If every home in the UK were made more efficient, the total carbon usage would drop considerably.

As home improvement measures go, it’s non-invasive and causes very little disruption to the household. All work is done from the outside of your external walls. An insulating material is injected into the wall through small holes drilled in the mortar joint of the wall. It can normally be done in two hours.

Can I qualify for a cavity wall insulation grant?

Yes, with the government’s ECO Scheme you can get cavity wall insulation and loft insulation for free if you’re eligible to improve your home’s energy efficiency. The long-running Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme helps people on certain benefits to cut their energy costs through home improvements. Free Cavity Wall Insulation grants are available to cover the full cost of installing cavity wall insulation if you receive a qualifying benefit.

Cavity wall insulation costs and savings

Cavity wall insulation can vary in cost and this is dependent on the size of your home. Whether you live in a one bedroom flat or a large detached house you will likely recoup the installation cost in 5 years or less. This will be purely down to the yearly energy bill savings you will make by having a properly insulated home.

Don’t often do reviews but felt this warranted one. A little slow getting the fitting date sorted out but once this had been sorted everything was plain sailing from start to finish. Can’t fault the engineer who fitted my combi boiler. Nothing was to much trouble to him, explained everything has he went along. Would recommend without hesitation.

The old boiler and tank were removed and the new condensing boiler fitted by the two installers from XL Heating. They were friendly, informative and tidy, working well as a team for two days. So far very happy.
