UK government’s boiler upgrade scheme increases heat pump grant to £7,500
From October 23rd 2023 you will now be able to secure a grant of up to £7,500 for the installation of an super energy efficient air source heat pump under the Governments Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
The £2,500 in extra support – on top of £5,000 already offered – aims to take the cost of installing an air source heat pump below that of the average gas boiler and offers a realistic alternative way to heat your home and hot water.
The boiler upgrade scheme (BUS)
This change is part of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) which aims to encourage the use of heat pumps as the main or only methods for homeowners to heat their homes.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is installer-led, which minimises the amount of paperwork you need to complete when applying for the grant.
Warma UK has all the details on this latest exciting development and our team can take you through the process and apply for the grant on your behalf.
Can i get a heat pump grant of up to £7,500?
There’s a good chance! Eligibility for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is not means-tested, meaning your income will not impact whether you qualify for the grant. This is part of the government’s commitment of achieving net zero and encouraging as many homeowners as possible to take advantage of air source heat pumps and the energy saving benefits they provide.
To qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, your property must hold a valid EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) from the last 10 years; have no outstanding insulation or wall cavity recommendations; be privately owned and be replacing a fossil fuel boiler such as a gas boiler.

The announcement of the grant increase was made on 21st September by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. Speaking about the increase, the Prime Minister reassured homeowners “There are no strings attached. The money will never need to be repaid.”
How do air source heat pumps work?
Air source heat pumps work by harnessing the ambient heat from the outdoor air, even on chilly days, and converting it into warmth for your indoor space.
Let’s understand the basics. Air source heat pumps are heating systems that harness heat from the outdoor air and transfer it inside your home, even in winter! This process is like how your refrigerator operates but in reverse.
They are made of three main components: an outdoor unit, an indoor unit, and a refrigerant.
- The evaporator coil (Outdoor Unit) absorbs heat from the air, even when it’s cold, using a refrigerant.
- The compressor: (Refrigerant) now containing the absorbed air, is compressed, raising its temperature.
- The condenser coil (Indoor unit) releases the heat from the hot refrigerant into your home’s heating system.
The benefits – More than just warmth:
Energy efficiency: Air source heat pumps are super energy-efficient, significantly reducing your heating bills and carbon footprint.
Consistent comfort: You’ll bid farewell to those chilly drafts and hello to a cosy, consistent temperature throughout your home. No more huddling around the heater!
Low maintenance: These pumps are known for their reliability and minimal maintenance requirements. Set it and forget it!
Quiet operation: Say goodbye to noisy heating systems. Air source heat pumps are very quiet and live outside!
Future-proof: Investing in this technology not only ensures your comfort but also positions your home for a greener future, as they comply with evolving environmental standards.
We’re big fans!
So, with this latest announcement that makes it easier than ever to have an air source heat pump installed in your home and sit back, relax and enjoy the future of heating while generating saving out of thin air!
